"Arbeit macht frei", which translates to " work sets you free" is a notorious phrase known to sit above the entrance of the Auschwitz concentration camp. As I stood before the threshold ,looking up at the mocking sign, my heart became significantly heavy. The moment seemed so surreal. Before me was the portal to a previous hell and grave yard to many human beings whom were tortured and executed . That I was there in the first place seemed even more unbelievable. Yet, there I was in a space I had only read about and learned of in my history lessons. I never imagined I would be there, but somehow, I knew it is where I would end up. It was through that portal of terror, that I walked to pay my respect to the souls which were worked mercilessly only to be freed by death. For they never stood a chance.
